ETSI summit “Releasing the Flow - Data Protection and Privacy in a Data-Driven Economy” organized today at ETSI was the place to exchange views and concerns on data protection and privacy, topics that impact both enterprises and citizens’ lives.
Data is of essence today. In 2014, the world created 44 billion Gigabytes of data everyday on the internet. IDC predicts growth to 463 billion Gigabytes per day in 2025. Europe is putting forward a comprehensive policy and legislative machinery to deal with data flow and data protection with GDPR entering into force on 25 May 2018.
After a welcome address by ETSI Director General, Mr. Luis Jorge Romero and ETSI chair of the General Assembly, Mr. Simon Hicks, the summit evolved around numerous speaking sessions. It dealt with the overall architecture of the legislative machinery, and on how market players in the ecosystem view it, how they use, protect and value data. Other sessions covered how EU trade partners apprehend the European context and, last but not least, what role standards can play in the equation, which standards should be developed and how to ensure to do the right thing at the right moment. Speakers investigated challenges faced with new technologies such as 5G, IoT, industry 4.0, smart cities or new connected sectors such as agriculture.
The programme included panel sessions to foster discussions as of today, in the data economy and whatever our role, we might have more questions than answers.
