ETSI Centre for Testing and Interoperability (CTI) on behalf of TC ESI, ETSI’s Technical Committee for Electronic Signatures and Infrastructures organized a remote Plugtests interoperability event on Electronic Signature Validation. This event was run remotely from 16 May to 15 July 2022 using a dedicated web portal.
Scope
The aim of the event was to check the interoperability of ETSI advanced digital signatures and the validation capacities of the participants in order to help them detect possible issues which may lead to different validation results.
The interoperability testing allowed participants to test their digital signature validation tools and to cross-validate ETSI Electronic Signatures/Seals relying on EU Member States' Trusted Lists (based on TS 119 612 and TS 119 615) and according to the following standards:
- European Standard EN 319 102-1 (Procedures for Creation and Validation of AdES Digital Signatures; Part 1: Creation and Validation) updated in 2021-11
- TS 119 102-2 (Procedures for Creation and Validation of AdES Digital Signatures; Part 2: Signature Validation Report) updated in 2021-09
- TS 119 172-4 (Signature Validation Policy for European Qualified Electronic Signatures/Seals Using Trusted Lists) updated in 2021-05
These specifications have been updated since the last Digital Signature Validation Plugtests in 2019 and include significant changes.
The signature formats addressed in this event are:
- XAdES: XML Digital Signature (EN 319 132-1 and ETSI TS 103 171)
- PAdES: PDF Digital Signature (EN 319 142-1 and ETSI TS 103 172)
- CAdES: CMS Digital Signature (EN 319 122-1 and ETSI TS 103 173)
- ASiC: Associated Signature Container (EN 319 162-1 and ETSI TS 103 174)
- JAdES: JSON Digital Signature (TS 119 182-1)
Registration
Registration opened on 16 Feb 2022. All participants had to register for the event in order to receive their credentials and be subscribed to the mailing list dedicated to this event.
All participants were expected to register individually. Each first person to register within an organization was de facto the official contact from this company for administrative matters.
Registrations closed on 12 May 2022.
The event was free of charge.
NDA
By registering to this event, all participating companies joined the new ESI Plugtests Programme under which the events conducted are covered by a single Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that the official contact received upon registration. Companies were not allowed to participate to the event if the Rules of Engagement (RoE) and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) were not signed. The deadline to sign the RoE and NDAs for the eSignature Validation Plugtests event was 13 May 2022.
The organizations already part of the ESI PLUGTESTS Programme were not asked to sign the RoE and NDA again.
Credentials to access to the testing web portal were sent once the portal is open.

All participants were invited to attend the kick-off conf call which was scheduled on Monday 16 May 2022. Invitations to this call were sent by the ETSI Plugtests Team to all registered participants.
The goal of this meeting was to present how to conduct the interoperability testing and to answer to any of the questions participants may have.
The testing was performed on a dedicated portal https://signature-plugtests.etsi.org/. Participants received the credentials to this portal before the kick-off meeting on 16 May.
For an efficient exchange of information, we have also created a slack channel. The participants received an invitation to join the slack channel before the event.
