Network X ISG F5G Workshop: F5G-A from Standards to Commercial Deployment

Network X 2024 took place from October 8th to 10th at the international conference centre, Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in France. ETSI, a partner of Network X, hosted the "Partner Workshop with ETSI ISG F5G" on the first day of Network X.

This workshop focused on F5G-Advanced initiatives, highlighting the latest developments and progress. It provided the participants with the status norms and the achievement made in F5G-Advanced, which will help to evolve fixed networks.

ISG F5G Workshop Network X

In picture are the five speakers who shared their F5G-Advanced viewpoints, plus the moderator. From left to right we have:

  • Dr. Philippe Chanclou, Team Manager of Fixed Access Networks, Orange
  • Dr. Olivier Ferveur, ETSI ISG F5G Chair, Post Luxembourg
  • Dr. Behnam Shariati, Deputy Head of Group Data Analytics and Signal Processing, Fraunhofer HHI
  • Dr. Diego Lopez, ETSI ISG ZSM Chair, Senior Technology Expert, Telefonica
  • Mr. Riku Päärni, CTO, Lounea
  • Dr. Marcus Brunner (moderator), ETSI ISG F5G Vice Chair, Chief Expert Standardization, Huawei

  • Dr. Olivier Ferveur, ETSI ISG F5G Chair, shared the progress of F5G-A standards. He announced the publication of F5G-A Release 3, and introduced the content of the key Work Items in Release 3.
  • Dr. Philippe Chanclou introduced the evolution of connectivity and management of Optical Access Network, and emphasized that energy saving, one of the F5G-A characteristic dimensions, has become crucial to Orange.
  • Mr. Riku Päärni, CTO of Lounea, a network operator from Finland, described the new digital realms they foresee, and introduced the key technologies that have and will be deployed in Lounea’s networks, which match perfectly with the six characteristic dimensions of F5G-A.
  • Dr. Diego Lopez, ETSI ISG ZSM Chair, highlighted the importance of Proof of Concept (PoC) demonstrations for the research and standardization of network automation. He introduced the ETSI ISG ZSM and ETSI ISG F5G joint PoC demonstration, which demonstrates the CAMARA Network as a Service (NaaS) platform built on top of F5G-A Optical Networks.
  • Dr. Behnam Shariati, responsible for F5G OpenLab, introduced several PoC demonstrations based on ETSI ISG F5G use cases, including cloud-based vision inspection for quality assurance and cloud-based control of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Robots.

The workshop showcased ETSI ISG F5G-A standardization and PoC demonstrations maturity. A solid step forward towards the commercial deployment of F5G-A in the industry, propelling us toward a full-fibre connected future.
