Brussels and Sophia Antipolis, 2 November 2015

The European Standardization Organizations – CEN, CENELEC and ETSI – are pleased to announce the launch of a new website for the third phase of the Seconded European Standardization Expert in China (SESEC) project. The SESEC website (www.sesec.eu) is intended to be a reliable source of accurate information about the Chinese and European Standardization Systems. It should be especially relevant and useful for European companies that wish to do business in China (and vice-versa).

The SESEC project is funded and implemented by the three European Standardization Organizations – CEN (European Committee for Standardization), CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) – together with the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association. The SESEC office in Beijing is managed by Dr Betty XU, who supports exchanges between European standardization stakeholders and their Chinese counterparts.

The SESEC project, which was originally launched in 2006, supports the ongoing dialogue between the European Standardization Organizations (ESOs) and the Standardization Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAC). In particular, it seeks to increase mutual understanding of the Chinese and European standardization systems, to foster cooperation among Chinese and European standardization stakeholders and to encourage the adoption and take-up of international and European standards in China. The ultimate goal is to facilitate market access on a reciprocal basis and foster trade between China and Europe.

The following areas have been identified as sectoral project priorities by the SESEC project partners: Internet of Things (IoT) & Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, communication networks & services, cybersecurity & digital identity, Smart Cities (including transport, power grids & metering), electrical & electronic products, general product safety, medical devices, cosmetics, energy management & environmental protection (including eco-design & labelling, as well as environmental performance of buildings).

The SESEC website (www.sesec.eu) features general information about the European and Chinese Standardization systems. It enables visitors to follow the activities of the SESEC expert, access all the project news items, newsletters, reports, and presentations. European stakeholders can benefit from the SESEC project newsletters and reports that offer meaningful insights about Chinese regulatory and technical developments related to standardization.

Easily accessible via any device thanks to its responsive design, the new SESEC website also allows visitors to subscribe to specific RSS feeds to be alerted when new contents are published on the website in areas they are particularly interested in. The website’s calendar will offer an overview of relevant events taking place in China and provide information about the SESEC expert’s efforts to promote the European standardization model in China.

CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) are organizations that develop and adopt European standards in relation to a wide range of materials, products, services and processes.

The members of CEN and CENELEC are the National Standardization Bodies and National Electrotechnical Committees of 33 European countries including all 28 EU Member States plus 3 EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and 2 EU candidate countries (Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). European Standards (ENs) that have been adopted by CEN and CENELEC are accepted and recognized in all of these countries.
CEN and CENELEC collaborate with the international standardization organizations ISO and IEC.

CEN, CENELEC and ETSI are officially recognized by the European Union as European Standardization Organizations, as defined by EU Regulation 1025/2012

European Standards facilitate cross-border trade and strengthen the European Single Market. They enable businesses and other organizations to ensure quality and performance, to protect health and safety, and (in certain cases) to comply with relevant regulations.
